GENEALOGY AIDS

There are several Mail Lists on the Internet that can help in your discover process. The ROOTSWEB GENEALOGICAL DATA COOPERATIVE is the host for several, including the Granddaddy of them all, ROOTS-L. Some of the Mail Lists that ROOTSWEB hosts are oriented toward: SURNAME/FAMILIES, REGIONAL, ETHNIC GROUPS, SOFTWARE and many more. Check them out! They are much more than just a Mail List host.

Cliff MANIS' Genealogical GEDCOM Server System, GenServ, is one of my favorite sites.  Cliff has done an excellent job of putting his site together.  Visit his site to see how painless it is to join and use his system.

Another site that I visit daily is the GenForum.  There are many, many surname discussion groups that you can join.  Your initial GenForum screen can be customized to include only the surnames that are of interest to you.  Try them out.

The USGenWeb Project is a growing undertaking where you'll find a well organized effort to organize the genealogy materials on the Internet. It is broken down by each state, and each state by county.

Identifying the children in a family may be somewhat easier if the parents had a naming tradition. Below is one such tradition that was followed by some Irish and English families.
Oldest son named after the Father's father
2nd son named after the Mother's father
3rd son named after the Father
4th son named after the Father's oldest brother
Oldest daughter named after the Mother's mother
2nd daughter named after the Father's mother
3rd daughter named after the Mother
4th daughter named after the Mother's oldest sister
2nd wife's oldest daughter named after the first wife, using her full name
